SUMMARY:Energy Transition and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:The Order of Engineers of Portugal (OEP) will host at its National Headquarters in Lisbon\, on March 4th\, the celebrations of World Engineering Day 2024\, by organising a Conference with the theme “Energy Transition and Sustainability”\, from 2:30 to 6:00 PM Lisbon Time (GMT) / 3:30 to 7:00 PM Paris Time (GMT+1)\, which will feature a panel of prestigious speakers. \nEnergy production and use are\, more than ever\, at the center of countries’ strategic considerations. The main objective of the event will be to encourage dialogue for the implementation of scientific research and technological development projects in the field of energy systems engineering\, which support industrial transformation\, innovation and the global economic structure. \nIn the context of growing tensions in the relationship between humans and nature\, it is crucial that engineers and policymakers prioritize a balanced approach between economic progress\, social justice and environmental preservation\, which are fundamental to a country’s energy security.

SUMMARY:Exploring Small Modular Reactors: Contrasting Development Landscapes in LAC and the US
DESCRIPTION:The World Energy Council is organising its first cross-regional World Energy Café in 2024\, taking place Wednesday\, 13 March for an insightful exploration of the development landscapes of small modular reactors and their potential impact on the energy sector with perspectives from LAC and North America. \n  \n \nSmall modular reactors (SMRs) are a promising innovation in the field of nuclear energy. Unlike traditional large-scale nuclear reactors\, SMRs are characterized by their smaller size\, modular design\, and enhanced safety features. These compact reactors offer several potential benefits\, including lower upfront costs\, scalability\, and versatility in deployment. \n  \nThe development of SMRs is gaining momentum worldwide\, driven by the need for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.  \n SMRs hold promise for various applications beyond traditional electricity generation\, including district heating\, industrial processes and desalination. Their compact size makes them particularly suitable for deployment in remote or isolated areas\, where access to traditional grid infrastructure may be limited. The online conversation will address applications\, financing and regulatory implications related to SMRs. \n  \nThis topic will be further explored at the 26th World Energy Congress in Rotterdam\, playing a pivotal role in our collective effort to redesign energy for people and the planet. Your participation will make a significant impact on shaping the future of energy! \n  \nPlease note the World Energy Café is a community event only\, not a public event. It is for Member Committee’s and their Members and the Future Energy Leaders. \n  \n  \n
